Have you heard of the non-surgical way to create a fuller top lip called the Lip Flip? “I already get filler injected into my lips,” you say. Well, we are not talking about filler in your upper lip. We’re talking about injecting the neurotoxin Dysport into your upper lip!
What is a Lip Flip?
As mentioned above, a Lip Flip does not use filler in the upper lip. It works by injecting Dysport into the upper lip, called the orbicularis oris muscle, which forces the upper lip to relax and “flip” slightly upwards, making it appear larger without actually increasing the lip’s size.
An interesting benefit of a Lip Flip is that, for those that expose too much of the upper gum when smiling, less gum will show after the Lip Flip.
The Lip Flip Compared to Dermal Fillers
As you may know, dermal fillers, such as Restylane Kysse and others, are injected into the lips to restore volume, and other Restylane products are used to smooth superficial facial lines and wrinkles. Second only to neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport, dermal fillers are the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedure. Most dermal fillers contain a natural ingredient called hyaluronic acid, which restores volume and moisture in the skin. When dermal fillers are injected into the lips, a plumper appearance is created.
A Lip Flip is less invasive compared to the injection of dermal filler into the upper lip. Unfortunately, the effect is shorter than that of fillers (about 2-3 months) and, because a lip flip is based on Dysport, the results can take up to a week to appear, while the results of dermal filler injections appear immediately.
Recovery from a Lip Flip
As with all neurotoxin injections, patients are told that they must avoid exercise for the remainder of the day and avoid sleeping facedown the first night. Bruising can occur, as well as a small bump at the injection site, which will fade.
