What is Breast Implant Revision?
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States, with millions of women enjoying a more beautiful bust thanks to the latest and safest FDA-approved implants placed by a skilled board certified plastic surgeon. Nevertheless, approximately 30,000 women every year choose breast implant removal, technically called explantation, for a variety of reasons.
Women choose to have breast implant revision surgery for a variety of reasons, such as the following:
- They wish to replace older implants with newer ones
- They have saline implants and wish to switch to gel implants (or vice versa)
- They desire a different sized implant—either larger or smaller, although larger is more often the choice
- They have a capsular contracture, caused by scar tissue tightening around the implant, creating pain and distortion of the implant
- They have implant failure, such as rupture or leaking of one or both implants
- The implant is intact, but has shifted in position
- There is unattractive wrinkling, sagging or asymmetry of one or both implants
- The patient has a disease in the breast that requires implant removal
The Breast Implant Revision Procedure
Breast implant revision surgery is performed in our on-site surgical suite. The incision is usually made wherever the original incision was made, but most often under the breast in the fold, through which the implant(s) are carefully removed. If you wish the implants to be replaced, your choice of implant type and size will be replaced. Otherwise, you may opt for a breast lift if your skin might remain too loose after your implants are removed. All of this will have been discussed at your private consultation.
Recovery from Breast Implant Revision Surgery
As with other breast surgeries, most patients return to work and/or social activities Most patients return to work and/or social activities unless more than a simple implant exchange was performed. Dr. Gerut will instruct you regarding heavy lifting and any exercise that uses the chest muscles.
Note
Breast implants can last for quite some time, but they are never guaranteed to be permanent. In particular, keep in mind that damage to a silicone gel implant can occur without your knowledge. For this reason, we recommend that you see Dr. Gerut every 3 to 4 years after implant surgery, so that he can confirm that your implants are intact.
